“Fun” Facts – Middlesex Township, Carlisle, PA
- A Continental Congress arsenal was established in 1777 during the American Revolution near the present-day Carlisle Barracks. It was known as “the Public Works at Carlisle.”
- U.S. Route 11 was once known as the Great Road. It opened around 1744 and was part of the European settlement that began in the early 1700s.
- The site at 3700 Spring Road is known as the “Farthest North Attained by Any Organized Body of the Confederate Army of General Lee, June 28, 1863.”
- Middlesex Township officially formed in 1859 from North Middleton Township.
- The Appalachian National Scenic Trail stretches for more than 2,174 miles along the Appalachian Mountains through Middlesex Township from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine.
- The stretch of U.S. Route 11 between I-81 and the PA Turnpike (I-76) is known as the “Miracle Mile.”
- A portion of the historic Carlisle Barracks, which is the second oldest military post in the United States—is located within Middlesex.
- The first iron cannon made in America was made in Middlesex Township along the Letort.
